How Do You Decide Which Projects to Take On?

We brainstormed recently in our Second Brain Membership about this question. Here are the criteria our members keep in mind when faced with a new project:

  • I already have some information on it in my Second Brain.
  • It’s aligned with one of my 12 favorite problems.
  • It brings me energy (vs. drains energy).
  • It aligns with my values and beliefs.
  • It solves a real problem in my life.
  • I have a concrete deadline.
  • It’s realistic to get done.
  • It’s fun!

What are your criteria for deciding if a new project is a go or no-go? Hit reply and share them with me.

From Self-Help to Somatic Healing: My Quest for Self-Knowledge (Part I)

When I left the religious faith of my youth, everything collapsed - my certainty, my sense of purpose, the very foundations of my life.

What do you do when the reality you once believed in dissolves away? This is the story of my unexpected 20-year journey to rediscover myself.

It began with an intellectual quest, devouring self-help books and immersing myself in ideas to understand the world and my place in it. But I soon realized that knowledge alone wasn't enough to transform who I was at the deepest level.

This led me to seek out transformative experiences that would change me, not just what I knew.

Join me in this first part of a blog series as I share the pivotal moments that set me on the path of somatic healing and reclaiming my true self.

Book Recommendation: Wild Courage by Jenny Wood

After 18 years at Google, rising from entry-level to executive, Jenny Wood learned that conventional career advice isn't enough.

In Wild Courage, she reclaims nine traits from their negative shackles and teaches you how to apply them in a savvy and sane way to supercharge your success:

  • Weird: Win as you or lose as “who?”
  • Selfish: Be your own champion.
  • Shameless: Kick impostor syndrome to the curb and self-promote with ease.
  • Obsessed: Push, persist, and perform at your highest level.
  • Nosy: Get curious to network confidently and learn from others.
  • Manipulative: Build influence with empathy and manage up like a pro.
  • Brutal: Draw lines and stick to them. Embrace the power of no.
  • Reckless: Err on the side of action and take healthy risks.
  • Bossy: Steer others to success, even if you’re not in charge yet.

There’s no better book to rewrite your career script and become the badass you know you have inside you.

Around this time of year, as Thanksgiving approaches, I always sense that “annual review season” is upon us. I feel it as a subtle tension in my body and soul. I notice that I’m slowly drifting out of alignment with my values. The grand plans I made at the beginning of the year no longer completely make sense. New interests and sources of meaning have arisen that I haven’t been able to pursue because I’m still working toward the old ones! I also feel a rising sense of anticipation and...

As we approach the end of the year, it’s almost time for my favorite practice…the personal reflective ritual known as an “annual review.” I’ve been doing annual reviews in some form since 2007, and teaching my process to others since 2019. Having led hundreds of people through annual reviews, I’ve been astonished at how much of an impact it’s had on their self-understanding, self-acceptance, self-confidence, and ultimately, their self-efficacy in accomplishing their goals. There is simply no...
