Mushroom Trip: My First Experience with Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy
I recently had my first psilocybin-assisted therapy session, and I want to share what I learned with you.
Living in Mexico, I've been amazed at how psychedelics are woven into everyday life here. After experimenting with micro-dosing, I decided to go deeper with a macro-dose under professional supervision.
What I discovered wasn't what I expected. Instead of healing my relationship with my father (my stated intention), the experience centered entirely around the women in my life—my mother, wife, and especially my daughter.
The insights I gained have transformed how I parent and relate to my family.
I'll share the science behind what happens in your brain, the challenging moments of "wrestling with an inner force," and the lasting changes I've experienced weeks later.
Fear Shrinks When Options Multiply
I've discovered something fascinating through my coaching work: you can measure someone's fear level by counting their perceived options.
If they think they have ZERO options ("There's nothing I can do, it's out of my hands"), they're in an extremely fearful state.
This is equivalent to a frightened animal cowering in the corner of a cage. They don't believe they can do anything to influence their situation. They have no choice but to endure it.
If they think they have ONE option ("I have to break up with her," "I have to quit my job") they're in a highly fearful state.
They see one possible course of action, but only one, and thus they still don't really have a choice, and are at the mercy of external forces.
If they think they have TWO options ("I have to either get a job or stay unemployed," "I can stay with him or leave him") there's still a lot of fear, although they're slightly more empowered as there's at least some choice.
This is binary thinking – you have to make a choice, and the available options represent two extremes without much subtlety or nuance.
If they think they have THREE or more options ("I can take this job, that job, or keep searching," "We can stay together, break up, or shift our relationship in this way..."), that's where the magic happens.
When you can see multiple paths, fear starts dissolving. You begin mixing and matching elements, creating new possibilities. Real agency emerges.
Your turn: Think of a current challenge. Write down every option you can see, no matter how small or unconventional. Push yourself to find at least three different approaches.
What did you discover when you expanded your options? Reply and let me know what shifted for you.

I’ve recently become a fan of bestselling author and entrepreneur Meghan Telpner’s podcast, the Courageous Pivot.
She explores what it really means to honour your truth—even when it challenges everything you’ve built.
Through personal stories, guest interviews, and practical tools, Meghan shares how to navigate fear, trust your intuition, and redefine success on your own terms.
